THE INFORMED VOTER

Bringing Informed Perspectives to Political Dialogue

NOT LEFT NOT RIGHT BUT FORWARD

After the first round of debates between the Democratic candidates for the presidency, I became intrigued by Andrew Wright Yang, who may be labeled as the entrepreneurial candidate. Reporters who follow him on the campaign trail comment  that Mr. Yang typically does not mention President Trump until he wraps up his stump speech. For example, in his opinion “Trump got the problems right, but his solutions were the opposite of what we need.” However, it is also clear that Mr. Yang is no fan of the president. he strikes the right tone by indicating that he does not hold a grudge against people for who voted for Donald Trump. In his speeches, he attempts to recognize the pain-and-suffering people feel when they lose their jobs. He appears to concern himself with how to soften that blow. I was pleased to hear the candidate express concern about truck drivers, call-center workers and others, i.e., normal people

I am becoming a fatigued over the political attacks which leaves each party taking extreme positions on immigration which now includes healthcare given Trump’s edict to eliminate the exception for critical healthcare for non-citizens. Even though he expresses liberal and progressive views; in my mind Andrew Yang is a pragmatic centrist that brings forth policies based on facts rather than ideology. Mr. Yang has labels himself as “nonideological” and created a popular campaign slogan that signals as much: “Not Left, Not Right, But Forward.”

“Not Left, Not Right,
But Forward.”

From my readings of “fake” news, such as the Washington Post and New York Times, Yang supporters believe he has risen above his label of a fringe candidate and view him as electable and equipped to bring some unity to the country. He has yet to separate himself from the herd of candidates, but he has maintained his 2% margin and attracts donations to the extent to allow him to qualify for the third debate.

“He has correctly identified the problems facing our country,” “He hits on a lot of common topics that people agree on.
